Created By Hand's Mosaic Tutor, Lis Greensmith, has been running her own mosaic business for over 10 years. Lis specialises in making quirky mosaics out of anything she can put her hands on, whether it's expensive Millefiori glass from Murano in Venice, or pottery and glass nuggets she has collected off the beaches in Cornwall on her holidays.
This workshop is suitable for both complete beginners and students with a little more experience so prior knowledge is not a requirement.
You will be able to choose the project you want to work on during this workshop from the list below
1. A Tea tray 4 Set of up to 4 coasters
2. A 7" Mosaic Mirror 5 Wall Plaques (Seahorse / Gecko / Dragonfly
3.An 8" square Mosaic Mirror
Here are some examples of the type of projects you could make
You don’t need to bring anything with you to the workshop, as all equipment and materials to create a beautiful mosaic project are provided and included in the course price.
The first part of the workshop is concerned with learning how to cut tessarae safely. Lis will explain the various types of tile nippers and their uses and then get you to use them to learn how to cut different shapes out of different types of tessarae (ceramic, vitreous glass, mirror). Once everyone has got to grips with that, Lis will then explain the processes involved in mosaicing, ie sealing, designing, assembling, fixing, grouting. This is called the "Direct Method" of mosaicing and Lis will explain more about this on the day.
Towards the end of the workshop Lis will give a grouting demonstration to show you what you need to do at home after the workshop, as you can only grout your design once the glue is completely dry.
So, at the end of the session, you will take home a beautiful mosaic item, along with a pot of grout and instructions, to enable you to finish your masterpiece at home. l
Please note that the tray you are given will be untreated MDF. You will then be able to paint it any colour you wish when you get home to match your mosaic design (advice will be given on paint choice during workshop but paint is not supplied).
The course focus is always on fun and friendly creativity with lots of personal tuition from an experienced mosaics artist.
FOOD: Teas and coffees will be provided throughout the day but we would suggest you bring your own lunch to the workshop. The class will be held adjacent to the marvellous Mulberry Tree Cafe, where if you prefer you can purchase reasonably priced and always delicious food.
The course will cost £55.00 to include all materials, use of tools and tea / coffees throughout the day.
If you have previously attended one of Lis' classes at Created By Hand and would like to try another to refresh your skills or take on a bigger project then you will be eligible for a 10% discount on the course price. Just mention this when booking.
