Chris Baxter is a sculptor who has been willow weaving since 2014 and has recently started teaching this ancient craft.
As a member of the Basket Makers Association she shares their aim “to promote the knowledge of basketry, chair seating and allied crafts . . . ”, which is why we are now offering classes in willow weaving here at Created By Hand
So if you have ever felt the urge to make a basket out of willow, come and enjoy a relaxing day here at Strelley Hall.
Our workshops have been developed to provide a quiet day of creativity and gentle tuition and this class is specifically tailored to suit a range of different abilities. Beginners and improvers welcome!
In this one day workshop you will be taught how to weave a simple basket using hoops and ribs in willow. An ancient form of basketry, used by early humans to contain their foraging and gatherings, developed over millennia but staying fundamentally the same.
The hoop and rib style of basketry differs in style from culture to culture. Using locally sourced materials, you will make one basket. Size will be determined by you and the materials. Once complete you will be able to make further baskets from easily accessible materials from your garden and hedgerow.
During the class Chris will guide you, step by step, starting with the foundation, weaving styles and then securing so that by the end of the class you will take away your very own willow basket.
As you repeat your weave during the day you will not only grow in confidence but in skill and by the end of the workshop you will have a strong basket to take home with you and use as you wish. Guidance will be given for future material gathering and adapting of readily available tools so that you can work independently
The course focus is always on fun and friendly creativity with lots of personal tuition from an experienced Willow Weaver.
FOOD: Hot and cold refreshments will be provided throughout the day but we would suggest you to bring your own lunch to the workshop. Alternatively the shop is situated next to the wonderful Mulberry Tree Cafe where you can purchase delicious food at reasonable prices.
The course costs £50.00 to include materials and use of appropriate tools and hot and cold refreshments throughout the day.
PLEASE NOTE - Bookings close ten days prior to the workshop, this is to enable adequate willow to be sorted and soaked.
