Chris Baxter is a sculptor who has been willow weaving since 2014 and has recently started teaching this ancient craft.
As a member of the Basket Makers Association she shares their aim “to promote the knowledge of basketry, chair seating and allied crafts . . . ”, which is why we are now offering classes in willow weaving here at Created By Hand.
So if you have ever felt the urge to make something out of willow, come and enjoy a relaxing day here at Strelley Hall.
Our workshops have been developed to provide a quiet day of creativity and gentle tuition and this class is specifically tailored to suit a range of different abilities.
This one day workshop is ideal for beginners or for those who want to produce a range of articles. Through making some simple objects, participants will have hands on experience with willow and will learn some useful techniques Hearts, Fish, Birdfeeders
Using locally sourced materials you can choose to craft a heart, a flower, a dragonfly or all three. All items can be placed in the garden or home.
During the class Chris will guide you, step by step, starting with the foundation, weaving styles and then securing so that by the end of the class you will take away your very own willow creation(s).
As you repeat your weave during the day you will not only grow in confidence but in skill and by the end of the workshop you will have some excellent items to display as you wish, the hearts look especially striking in a mobile, whilst the flowers, like their living counterparts, look good planted in threes or fives. Just let your imagination run free!
The course focus is always on fun and friendly creativity with lots of personal tuition from an experienced Willow Weaver.
FOOD: Hot and cold refreshments will be provided throughout the day but we would suggest you to bring your own lunch to the workshop. Alternatively the shop is situated next to the wonderful Mulberry Tree Cafe where you can purchase delicious food at reasonable prices.
The course costs £50.00 to include materials and use of appropriate tools and hot and cold refreshments throughout the day.
PLEASE NOTE - Bookings close ten days prior to the workshop, this is to enable adequate willow to be sorted and soaked.
